TONY,
Most of, if not all of the deeds of NANSEMOND CO., VA. were destroyed by
the several wars in that area, what have survived completely or near
complete are the land patents.
These patents go back to the 1620's that I know of. They are very valuable
in all research in the NANSEMOND CO., VA. ,CHOWAN-GATES- ETC. area of NORTH
CAROLINA.
Using these land patents with the vestry books of VIRGINIA along with tax
and church records & bible records , with the deeds & marriage records of
NORTH CAROLINA, it is possible to tract our ancestors back a long way.
In the case of william allumby who patented land in 1637, then GEORGE
ALLUMBY in 1654 patented land next to this WILLIAM ALLUMBY in ISLE of WIGHT
,VIRGINIA, this GEORGE ALLUMBY later sold his land to WILLIAM CADOGAN who
later ended up selling this land to WILLIAM RAWLS (listed as RALLS ) on
records at which time the land was in NANSEMOND CO., VIRGINIA.
This WILLIAM RAWLS is the same one listed on land deeds in CHOWAN CO.,
NORTH CAROLINA.
The county lines may move but the land it self does not, by checking out
ALL the neighbors in each deed or patent and church list or tax list you
can get a good idea of where tha land was and of where to start for family
connections.
It is said that at least 70% of all people listed on land records are
related. This has been proven out time and time again in my research.
That is why I am so interested in the people named on these land records.
The RAWLS, JERNEGAN, KEEN, ODOM, PERRY, MILES, NORFLEET among other
families all witnessed for each other on various transactions over the
years, ALL of these families have intermarried.
Check out ALL names on these records, and you will be pleasantly surprised.
thanks.
