WILL OF THOMAS LUTEN 1766

NORTH CAROLINA
CHOWAN COUNTY
In the name of God Amen
I Thomas Luten of the Province and County aforesaid calling to mind that it
is ….appointed for all mena to die doe make and ordain this my last Will and
Testament in manner and form following revoking and disallowing all manner of
wills by me heretofore made.
Item I give to my wife Hannah Luten for her use and ocupation during her
life or widowhood, one negro man called Darby, one negro woman called old
Murrear, one negro woman called young Murrear, one negro woman called Pheby,
and one negro girl called little Janey, and after the decease or marriage of
my said wife, I give the above mentioned Young Murrear and her increase to my
son William Luten. I also give to my son William Luten one negro woman
called Judah and one negro man called Darby.
Item I give to my son John Luten one negro man called Charles and twenty
shilling sterling.
Item I give to my son Thomas Luten after the death or marriage of my wife
one negro woman called Old Murrear and her increase, if any.
Item I give to my grandson Thomas Luten after the death or marriage of my
wife one negro girl called Little Janny
Item I give to my daughter Elizabeth Mathias after the death or marriage of
my wife one negro wench called Pheby
Item I give to my granddaughter Hannah Mathias one negro girl called Lettice
(?).
Item I give to my granddaughter Esther Luten one negro girl called Mary
Item I give to my grandson Thomas Mathias one negro boy called Bobb
Item I give to my grandson Saml Luten one negro boy called Demsey
Item I give to my wife one negro boy called Anthony
Item I give to my son William Luten all my carpenters, joyners and coopers
tools---

It is my will and desire that my negro man called Larance should have his
freedom at my death for his truth and fidelity, as well as for the many good
service as he has done me and mine. I also give the said negro Larance for
his use and occupation the land whereon he now lives during his life, and
after his death I give the said land to my daughter Elizabeth Mathias and her
heirs and assignees forever.

I give to my daughter Elizabeth Mathias all the rest and residue of my estate
of what kind or quality whatever. Lastly I do hereby appoint my trusty and
well beloved friends Edw. Vail and Thomas Bonner Executors and Elizabeth
Mathias Executrix to this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I
have hereunto set my hand and seal this 21(?) day of August anno domini 1766.
