My husband's ancestor, Thomas BETTERLY, bought land in 1719 in what was then
Chowan Co. but later became Bertie Co., described as:

"...1420 acres more or less, joining Henry SPELLER, COGSWELL, DOWNING and
Morattock river as by Patent 1 Dec 1712 to Edward SMITHWICK now decd. and
by William CHARLETON conveyed to the sd. Paris 15 Apr 1718 by Vertue of
Power to him granted by the last will and Testament of the sd. SMITHWICK..."

I can't find the Moratuck River (by any spelling) in my NC Gazetteer. Did
it have its name changed, or am I just missing it?
