I live out in West Texas and had never been to North Carolina before last
summer. My visit to Clay and Macon counties could not have been nicer. All
of the people that I met in the library, courthouse or just on the street
could not have been nicer and more helpful to me. It was a really wonderful
experience.
My ties to Clay county go back to my ggggrandfather Enos Scroggs (b
3/12/1807 d 9/10/1857) and his wife Jane McConnell (b 8/4/1810 d 3/2/1865).
I believe Enos moved to that area in the 1820s from Blount county Tennessee.
Their son William L. Scroggs (b 6/29/1838 d 4/13/1862) wife Elizabeth
Webster (b 6/19/1838 d ?) served with companies C and G of the 39th Regiment
of North Carolina Troops and died in Knoxville, Tennessee possibly of
typhus.
Their son William Jefferson Scroggs (b 12/27/1862 d 3/12/1929) was married
to Mary M. Parham (b 5/23/1865 d 10/1889).
Their son, my grandfather, William Lucious Scroggs (8/26/1883 d 11/24/9166),
wife Laura Elizabeth Mull (b 3/29/1881 d 2/15/1967).
Their son Edward Lucious Scroggs (b 1/28/1923) wife Allie Mae Holcombe (b
9/7/1928)
I know that Enos and William L. are buried in Clay county in the Ft. Hembree
cemetery. I have a lot of dates but not much detail. If anyone has any of
the specifics on this family I would be very interested. There are many
Scroggs family members around Brasstown especially on Settawig Road in the
adjoining county of Cherokee but they seem to be not in this direct line.
Thanks for any help.
