Subject: [CLAY] 1880 Clay County Census
Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 18:35:09 -0700
I have been looking for our Joseph Monroe Thomas on the 1880
census records for some time. He was born in 1836 in Yancey
County N.C. and migrated to Union County Georgia with his parents
William Hunsucker and Nancy Willis Thomas about 1855. He was on
the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Union County Georgia but
disappeared from there for the 1880, reappears in Georgia in
Lumpkin County Georgia on the 1900... we all know why there's no
1890 census. A friend hd received the LDS CD's as a present and
looked Joseph up for me on the 1880 records and he shows up in
Hayesville, Clay Co. N.C. listed as a minister and farmer with
wife Neoma (Naomi Adeline Hayes) and five of the oldest (total
nine) children. Our question, why is he in Hayesville? Is this
where he got his ministerial training? If so are there records
of such? We knew him as a Baptist circuit preacher. Now we
wonder if perhaps some of his children were born there in Clay
County? How long did he stay there? Anyone know anything about
this line of Thomases? Leslie Thomas

"The old ways are passing, including our ways of coming and
going, but many still remain if we but take the time to stop and
look and to remember before they are lost forever." a quote by
the members of the Union Co. GA. Historical Society.
"Cherokee blood, if not destroyed, will wind its courses in
beings of fair complexions, who will read that their ancestors
became civilized under the frowns of misfortune, and the causes
of their enemies. "
