I made a trip to visit relatives in both North and South Carolina in about
2003. At the end of that trip, my uncle brought out his Box. Everyone has
one. It's the place where all sorts of family memorabilia goes because no one
knows what else to do with it. Old family photos, newspaper articles, etc.
He had a bunch of old photos dating from the late 1800s and early 1900s that
I wanted copies of, with the intention of putting them in frames to display.
Well, too many pictures and not enough display space, so they needed an
album. That's when I lost all control of this project. I have pictures of
several gg grandparents forward; pictures of people's houses or the land where the
houses stood; pictures of their gravestones when available; copies of
obituaries, wills, and other legal documents; copies of stuff about my parents from
World War II; stuff pulled off the Web about various branches of the family;
copies of as much stuff having to do with family history as possible. So
now I'm in volume 3 or 4 (I've lost count and there's a bunch of stuff that
needs to be filed) and the whole thing has taken on a life of it's own. We had
a mini family reunion in 2005 in Hayesville, and various members of the
family brought out their Boxes and I brought out what I had done to that date on
my family history album. They were impressed with my organization, and we
found that we didn't all have the same stuff. This is a work in progress and I
hope someone after me will take up the torch and carry it. It's been a labor
of love and has certainly put some order into what could have been more
chaos. I've tried to preserve as much of the story as possible, not just when
people were born, married, and died. I REALLY wish I and my album could be
with you this summer! Cindy
