Subject: Re: Broderbund census CD's and index CDs

There are many more problems with the Census CDs than males and females
reversed for 1800 and 1810. Here's the complete list of what people near
me have found missing. These are from the older census CDs, but many of
these problems are still in the newer census CDs (300 series). We
haven't checked all of them. We live in VA, and are doing census
research mostly in VA and TN, so that's most of what we've noticed. Some
of the information came from others. Our librarian tells me that Harvard
U. has statistics from all of the censuses (including numbers of
households) by county for all census years. It would be tedious to
check, but I've suggested to Broderbund that they do this. I found the
census information at (http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/census/).
As far as I know, these errors are not in the book indices from AIS, and
the same data were used, confirmed by Broderbund. Broderbund says that
they used the magnetic tapes that were used to make the census index
books. For the second series of census CDs, FTM implied that most of
the problems were fixed, but as far as I can tell, the only problems that
were fixed were obvious spelling errors, like a space in the name, or
"JAEMS" for "JAMES." Maybe some of the wrong counties are also in the
book indices. As best I can tell, the same census indices are on the
ancestry site (http://www.ancestry.com). So the book indices are the
only backup source I've found as are the indices at the FHL on microfiche
(mostly 1850 and before). AGLL makes some census indices that aren't on
the 300 series of Broderbund Census CDs. Now you can also check the
USGenWeb page for the county of interest, and there might be a census
index for the county or even copies of the census. This site is for
census online (http://www.doitnow.com/~moravia/census.html). It includes
some census sites that aren't on USGenWeb.
Feel free to pass this around. I'll add more problems to the list if
they're reported to me.

counties
( also listed in 1850 VA) (WV didn't exist in 1850)
