dear Anne. About Thomas Gregory.
My cousin Bill Harris laboriously copied "The New Church Book" records
presented by Elder Hodges Gallop July 1839 to the Regular Baptist Church
at Powells Point.
On p 19 is entered name of Thomas Gregory among a list of male members
not dated but written 1832, apparently. "Deceased" has been recorded
after his name, but it is obvious that designation was added long after
the list was recorded, as were many others' deaths.
May 1832 Thomas Gregory came forward and was restored to full membership
(p32)
p 49 Dec. 1838 William Greves and wife Sally Greves came forwd and rec'd
in fellowship. Also Fanny Gregory, Sr rec'd. All were baptised.
p. 49/50 Wed before lst Sun Jan 1839 Fanny Gregory Jr. came fwd, gvn
full fellowship and baptsd
p51 Jan5, 1839 Sister Betsey Gregory from Sawyers Creek (Camden) seated
herself
Jan24 "Sermond" delivered by Elder John Vincent (I don't know that name
and think he was a visiting minister from another region, a common
occurence), AT THE HOUSE OF BROTHER THOMAS GREGORY
p 53 Sun, May 3d 1839 Letitia Gregory came fpwd, recd and baptsd with
others including my grgrgrandmother widow Nancy Johnson (nee Hill). I
never knew she was a Baptist. In 1844 Nancy was deprived of privelege of
church--I believe that is when she married wm Guard.
Feb. 184l Death of Bro. Wm Greves recorded
Aug 1844 Betsey Gregory from Sawyers Creek sat in conference
Dec 1844 Death of Thomas Gregory recorded in church book.
Nov 1848 Sister betsey Gregory a visiting faithful from Sawyers Creek
1849 Sally Greves and Fanny Gregory & Bethany Grives on list of names
regstd
Not dated Fanny Gregory signed church covenant
Dec 1849 Fanny W. Gregory mentioned nothing specific
Nov 1851 Manliff R. Gregory came fow'd and recd
Mar 1852 " " " and Fanny applied for letter
of dismission going West granted
Sally Greves died Oct 1, 1852
Mar 1853 Betsey Gregory from "Bethety Church tuck seat"
Letter from Manleff R had been rec'd from Mo., but they had not joined
another church.
Patsy Gregory rec'd Aug. 1868; signed covenant with others June 1869
A Mary Margaret Gannett mentioned Feb 1866, Bill copied . Maybe
Garrett, a local family. I have never seen the name Gattin that I can
remember.
I am happy you mentioned Betsey Toler having a Director to confuse us.
I t certainly had. I learned only fairly recently that Thomas Gregory
must have had two wives, and a dau by the 2d one named Director, after
puzzling over the Directors for years. I had also done much fretting
over a deed involving Betsey Toler Gregory, trying to make her
inherited land and parents be in Kitty Hawk. I don't think they were.
though.
The deed Book 21, Currit p. 214, 1836: Benjamin and Director Gallop to
James Melson land at Graving Creek and Currit Sound "from my mother
Betsey Toler Gregory"... There were and are Tolers in Kitty Hawk and
there was also a creek that had a name similar to Graving, in some Kitty
Hawk deeds, although it is not very clearly written in the those deeds.
Also I am pretty sure Benjamin did come from the Banks. He appears there
in 1840 near where Peter Gallop appeared in 1830. And Director and Ben
Gallop had descendants named Peter. But there could quite possibly be a
Graving Creek on mainland as I am not terribly familiar with many of
their place names.
Director and Ben's descendants I believe still live in Halls Harbor area
of Jarvisburg, Currituck north of Powells Pt.
But I've also noted that Thomas Gregory, age 8l, age given because he
was a pensioner, lived next to Matthias D. Toler. You will certainly
have seen this record. There are experts who can differentiate
between these Mathias Tolers, but I find them utterly confusing.
It certainly does not help that one Toler woman { Julia,a daughter of
James Toler and grandaughter of the Mathias Toler whose will was dated
1807), had a brother Matthias Toler and married another Matthias Toler.
There was also a Matthias Toler in Kitty Hawk in 1840 (died 1842)
Elder Hodges Gallop's first wife was Mary "Polly" Melson, and was
certainly a relative of James of the deed, but I have never mastered her
exact lineage. Some claim her father was actually William.
If I make this any longer, it will probably be lost in space as so many
of my previous messages have been.
Sincerely Annie Lee
