While I don't own the book, I can see in the preview of Stick's "The Outer Banks of North Carolina" some early Powells Point history. It's on pp. 22 and 267. The gist is that on 8 September 1663, the Lords Proprietors of Carolina issued the first land grant to John Colleton, and by the winter of 1664-65, a plantation had been established on Colington Island. Later Peter Carteret is in charge of the plantation and an effort is made to raise hogs at nearby Powell's Point. Land was cleared on Powell's Point and a large hog house was built. A 27 August 1667 hurricane did extensive damage to the site. Stick says that Colleton suggested that hogs be raised on Powell's Point and horses and cattle be raised on Colington Island. Does anyone know who Powell was?
