The reference to Pig Point being in the shape of a pigs head as seen from the air was just to assist in identifing the area described to me by the personnel at the Courthouse during my visit the first week of July. I did not mean to infer that it was seen that way by the early inhabitants. From the early maps, Powells Point appears to be the lower half of Currituck County. The area where the bridge from Dare County connects with Currituck County is now called Point Harbor which is what I knew it to be in the 40's.
There were only three working farms on Roanoke Island that I was aware of as I grew up in the 40's and 50's. Dough, Berry and Quigley. Mr Quigley was killed when his tractor turned over on top of him. That was in the mid-late fifties.
Dough, on the North End, Berry, just north of Manteo (new high school sits on that site now) and the third was in Wanchese on the south end of the island. Then there was the 60 acres of grapes at an old winery located at Mother Vineyard about a quarter mile from the Berry farm. It was not in operation but the grapes were great. They are all gone as well. Pine trees and homes have taken root where those marvelous Scupernongs once graced the landscape.
