Moyock Creek is in Moyock Village, it is on Tulls Creek Rd. my cousins and
myself used to spend many summer days down at the bridge skimming rocks
into the Creek. The Poyner home is to the right of the Creek. It is the
life blood of Moyock Village, everybody there loves the Creek. There is a
picture of it on Marion Welches book It is on the cover. marion says that
Local belief is that Moyck as the original name for this small village.
Then about 1800 the creek became a busy port for shipping cypress hinges,
trees were cut from the Dismal Swamp and manufactured into shingles in
Moyock, and the port and the Creek became known as Shingle Landing.

The lbemarle coastal region bordering the Dismal Swamp abouds with countless
coves and tributaries where waterlilies float in all their beauty, their
lucious petals opening to the sun and the coyly folding when dusk appears,
tiny frogs keeping guard as they sit proudiy enthroned on the lily pads.

It is from these trees, growning so abundantly in the great Dismal Swamp,
that the timber was cut and the shingles manufactured and shipped from
Shingle Landing Port to give Shingle Landing its place in history during the
colonial times.

In 1910 Chingle landing Creek was dredged to a depth capable of accomodating
boats of considerable size.

Many made a living from fishing the waters of Moyock Creek and Northwest
River. Among those who fished commecially were Martin Gray and his
assistants, Tom Sawyer and Mote Mullen.

f ish house on the left bank owned by Will Poyner was the scene of many
such activity in the spring. Nets set early in the day or late in the night
were emptied into the fishing boats by mid afternoon of of the following
day.

In the spring, summer and fall the creek was the place to meet our friends
on the rails and watch boats come in. My father often told me stories of
how they would swim in the creek on a hot summers day. They would all get
out when carten Linsey jumped in with his tractor tire. He later became
the fat man in the Barnum and Bailey Circus
