Just a note of thanks to all of you who helped me with the Thomasville
Baptist Orphanage n/k/a Baptist Children's Homes of NC. I did contact them
and they were able to pull from microfilm the all the papers used to admit my
Grandmother (her oldest brother placed her there as both their parents had
died and none of the older children was in a financial position to care for
her). She was valedictorian of her last 3 grades, went on to Mars Hill
college (then a Junior College) and on the Meredith College. Apparently a
childless couple who were supporters of the Orphanage took a liking to her as
she was doing so well in school at the Orphanage and decided to sponsor her
way through college. She'd never have had those opportunities had she
stayed with one of her siblings. Most all of her older siblings had no
education past 4th grade as they went to work in the cotton mill in Burke
county, NC as soon as they were old enough....made fifteen cents an hour for
12 hour days...............
