I can help on this one. My Mother is a Jernigan from Sampson County. There is
a book out called the Jernigan Reunion by Lillian Jernigan Worley (now
deceased). Here's what it says about your Jesse Jernigan.
Pg.205
Jesse Jernigan, son of Elisha and Zilpha Gibbs Jernigan, married Naomi Bell,
daughter of Archibald Bell of Duplin County. They lived in Sampson County
until the death of Naomi, then in early 1800s they sold their property in
Sampson County and moved away. Issue of Jesse and Naomi are:
1. William Jernigan b. ca.1775
2. Daniel Jernigan, married Nancy McKay of Robeson County, N.C.
3.Jesse Jernigan Jr. was still living in N.C. in 1828 when he sold land
inherited from his Uncle Elisha Gibbs.
4.Elisha Jernigan, moved PROBABLY to Columbus County, N.C.
5.Ezekiel Jernigan, moved to S.C. before 1803, later he was in Columbus
County, N.C.; then in Horry County, S.C. and later in Chesterfield County,
S.C. No futher record.
This family is listed in length through pages 205-209. Elisha Jernigan
recieved pay for service in the Revolutionary War from N.C. They do give
deeds listed as : deed book D, F, T, U pg.148 and deed book 4A, pg.210 of
Duplin County, N.C. The land was in the Goshen Swamp area of Duplin.
The Tarver you mentioned in the will. Is the wife of Jesse Jernigan's son
William. Willaim Jernigan of Robeson County, TN. He married Lucy Tarver
(Carter?). Faye Tennyson Davidson furnished the info. for the book, she is a
decendant of William and Lucy.
Most of the Jernigan's came from the Bertie/Sampson/Duplin county area. They
have a annual reunion held each year. This year it is May 6th in Dunn, N.C.
If I can help more let me know. I can also put you in touch with some
Jernigan researchers as well as the lady that wrote the 2nd edition to the
Jernigan Reunion book and is now working on the third Edition.
