Robert(1722) and William Southerland came from King and Queen CountyVirginia
to Duplin. Their ancestors who came from Scotland spelled the name
Sutherland.

This is from Dallas Herring own ancestry. His mother was a Southerland.

Thanks so much for that, Peggy - According to family legend, repeated &
written this is what we had on our Margaret "Ida" SUTHERLAND, from Scotland ca
1740 mar Alexander STUART/STEWART from Scotland ca 1740. This "The Outline" by
the Rev. Nicholas TALLEY written in ca 1857 for his children & their children:
Margaret "Ida" (SUTHERLAND) from Scotland 1740, mar Alexander STUART/
STEWART, from Scotland 1740, young man - these were in Hanover Co, VA - came down
into Greene Co, GA around 1792/93.....This info is written in "The Outline"
by the Rev. Nicolas TALLEY(2 May 1791 - 10 May 1873) son of Caleb TALLEY &
Elizabeth (STUART/STEWART) ca 1857 or so.....some maybe in 1860's - but was
written down & passed from father to son over the years - there were
supposedly some 3 copies at one point, one for each of Rev Nicholas TALLEY's sons,
but where/what happened to them I don't know.....
But the fascinating part of the story is that it is written in these very
words:

"Grand Ma had been kidnapped in a pleasure boat when a child, with several
others, and brought to the New World in a British ship. Her family were
wealthy."

[For Jackie & Lura - I had the wrong form of the verb - it was 'were,' not
'was!' Always thought that the phrasing was very quaint sounding!]

In the book I have on my TALLEY family, titled The Caleb TALLEY Family of
Hanover Co, VA and Greene County, GA., written by Mr. John William Talley of
Macon, GA, he met w/a Tazewell T. TALLEY, III now deceased who was a direct
descendant of Nicholas TALLEY & who had in his possession a notebook which
contained "The Outline" which he had received from his parents & he knew there
were 2 copies, the other one owned by a distant cousin in Atlanta."

The dau of Alexander STUART/STEWART & wife, Margaret "Ida" (SUTHERLAND) was
Elizabeth (STUART/STEWART) who mar Caleb TALLEY.

Thanks again, Peggy - one of my deepest regrets was that I never got to meet
Dr Herring personally....
