Hi Pam,

It is said that my 4th gggggrandfather was b. in Franklin Co., NC.
The only proof is alisting in this Estate record of Edgecomb Co. that
he was even from NC. Family says Franklin. Below is the record.

(First and only record we have found in NC of a Matthew GAY)
Estate Records of Edgecombe Co., NC. 1730-1820, The will of Mary Gay,
inventoried 30 March 1795, May Court 1795, shows that additional
inventory was taken by Hezekiah Langley, Admr. August Court 1795.
A ccount of the sale by the admr., June 16, 1795. Benjamin Gay, Richard
Gay, Henry Gay and Matthew Gay were buyers, August Court 1795. Account
current with theadmr., May 1795. Division of money arrising from the
estate equally among the legal representatives, namely, James Gay, Simon
Gay, Sarah Langley and Elizabeth Langley, August 1796. (stated below is
his
death date: 8/27/1843 and it states he was 60 at death. If so he would
have
been b. 1783. How could he have been a buyer in at estate at the age of
12 years old above in 1795???

I feel he is related to these GAYS mentioned here, but have never found
any proof. Family states he came to GA with Zorababel Gay in early 1800
and that Zoro was his father. I need his parents and any siblings...

Died in State Prison, Milledgeville, GA

The story of Matthew's incarceration has been passed down in the
family.
According to John Harry Gay, Jr., Matthew's greatgreatgreatgrandson, he
went to
prison for one of his sons who had killed a man. Apparently this was a
practice
that was allowed then. We do not know who the son was or the name of
the man
he killed at present.
