Hi all,
First off I want to let you all know that Ron Dailey is going to be one of
the ASC's for us. Ron is an awesome addition to the leadership of the
project and working together we will guide the project through the next 2
years.
I want to commend each of you for the fantastic jobs most of you are doing
with your sites. Please keep up the great work so that we can continue to
provide researchers with a vast amount of research for NC.
I also want to remind everyone to update all broken links on your sites. I
have noticed some sites haven't been updated since 2007 and have links to
counties that have been moved from Rootsweb to the NCGenWeb server as well
as other sites that have been gone for just as long if not longer. For
example: Jeff Weaver's Civil War site is no longer in existence and hasn't
been for well over a year! We do have an excellent Civil War site, as well
as other Military sites and projects right here within the NCGenWeb Project.
Check around and see what is available within our project that you can
recommend to your researchers.
I also notice that some sites have your names on the home page but no where
to email you. I would like for each of you to have at least 1 hyperlink on
your home page that your visitors can click to email you. It is frustrating
to have to hunt all over a site just to find a CC's email address.
If you aren't interested or can't keep your sites updated and broken links
corrected please let me know. We will put the site up for adoption and find
a temporary "Site sitter" to take care of it in the meantime.
I will be dropping by your sites at various times and intervals to make sure
they are being updated and that the broken links are being corrected. If I
do find something wrong I will email you personally to let you know what, if
anything, I have found and give you a time frame to correct any and all
errors. Let's hope everyone will go ahead and fix all their broken links now
Hint Hint : )
Also, if you use FreeFind as your search engine, they now have a wonderful
What's New tool that you can use on your sites. They give you the HTML for
it, all you do is add it to your home page and your visitors will be able to
click on the link and it will give them a complete listing including the
link right to the page of all new updates that you have made to your site. I
am currently incorporating it into my sites and I have received rave reviews
on it so far. You might want to give it a try, all you have to do is make
sure your site is indexed every so often and that is it.
Which brings me into asking this. I want to update the county wish list page
if anyone is interested in any county that might come up in the future
please let me know which ones so I can update our listing. The listing that
is there is from 2007 and I will be deleting the old info and would like to
be able to add each of you for possibly taking a site over if the present
site owner can't or won't continue to keep their sites up.
We will also be holding a logo design contest. I would like for any of you
that are artistic to design or redesign a logo for NCGenWeb project. We will
keep the contest open until July 31 to see what you can come up with. Please
send your designs to me or to Ron and we will post them on the site so that
we can all pick the best one to use on the state site.
So, lets all get to work on updating broken links, making new logos for the
contest, making sure we have an email address available on our home pages
and adding lots of new materials to our sites. : )
Thanks in advance to each of you!
Diane
