Martha,
The first time I heard anything about Henry Hill being married first to
Betsy Rouse was in the late '70's when Fannie Lee Hill Prescott published
her "My Hill and Allied Lines." She had called and asked my mother some
questions about our immediate family just before she had it printed. I just
happened to see a copy of her book and became interested in what she had
researched. She never told me specifically how she knew about Betsy, but
there was something mentioned in the book about some Bible records that had
been found. (I'll have to check her book to find out exactly what was said
about those Bible records.) Fannie also got information from Ima. I've
seen Betsy Rouse referred to as Elizabeth Rouse in Ima's papers, but have
seen no reference about proof. I talked to Ima a couple of times, but not
about this particular thing. So, I don't know whether Ima or Fannie (or
someone else) first worked out that Elizabeth/Betsy Rouse was the first wife
of my Henry Hill. I, too, have wondered if somehow the name is wrong.
Could it be that Susannah C. Rouse Hill was known by the nickname Betsy and
someone assumed that meant Elizabeth? That hardly seems likely, I guess.
Becky
