NOTE: Some counties maintain what is called a Delayed Birth Record. These
records became prevalent after Social Security was started in 1934.
Records of people that were signing up for social security had to prove
date of birth to establish age. These records could include bible records,
church records, etc., so there are some birth records that are recorded
that will reach before 1914, some go back to 1880s. These documents became
delayed birth records. Officially, the govt. started keeping birth records
in 1914, but because of social security, there are older records on file in
some counties (No, I do not know specifically which counties, but I have
seen them recorded for several NC counties). Ask for records of delayed
birth, they should know what these are, and it seems to my recollection
tthat they were maintained in the county courthouse.

repeatedly told by the state and the counties that birth and death records
weren't started until 1914. So anything before that year is very doubtful!
