There is a Capt Samuel Reed in the NC Militia 1780-81 who is listed as dying
in 1810. The DAR Patriot index lists him as married to Agnes Kay and born
1728 so I don't think this is your man.

There is a Sgt. Samuel Reed in Quinns Company of the 10th Regiment under Col
Shepard who enlisted 20 July 1778 for 9 months. In the same company is
Private Jas. Reed. In the list of Army Accounts, Samuel Reed is listed as #
7663 and from the Salisbury District. Also from the Salisbury District are
these Reeds: Andrew # 4005, Geo. # 3068, Thomas # 1443, James # 8135, and
Alvin # 7848.

A Samuel Reed who served as a Private is listed as a pensioner in Burke
County, for service in the N C Militia receiving $139.98 per month commencing
4 Mar 1831 when he was 79 years of age (I think this is about 3 years older
than your man)

Samuel Reed, Private is # 1251 in a list of pensioners compiled by the NC
Secretary of State in 1835.

Don't know if this cleared or muddied the water for you...
