Hello
A list of names came across our Cone Family Webpage and has sparked an
interest. Among the names listed were Crisp, Nelson, Cherry, Matthews,
Taylor, Hicklin, Odom, Wheatley, Whitehurst, Weatherby, Barnhill and others.
Although these names are not connected to the Cone Family, I do indeed have
roots which originated in Martin Co. NC. You mention something about having
100 members but no one is posting! Sounds sorta familiar. We started our in
very much the same way but with one surname common to all members- CONE
We have approximately 70-80 members on our list and the results have been
terrific. Now here is my interest:
Isaiah Cone b. ca 1771 in Halifax, Martin Co., NC
m. Mary Polly Stilley b. 1780 in Craven Co. NC and was the daughter of
Fountain Stilley.
We believe that Isaiah is the son of William Cone b. 1734 in Halifax, Martin
Co
NC and d. there in 1796. He m. Elizabeth Morris who was b. 1747 and d. 1795
He m. next: Claoannah "Chole" Duggan in 1759. She was b. 1743 in Bertie Co
NC and was the daughter of William Duggan b. 1715 in Ireland and his wife was
Mary Smithwick b. 1715 in England.
William attended the Shewalkee Baptist Church in Martin Co and was
excommunicated for excessive consumption of spirits!
It is believed by myself and some others that he is the lineage of Neel (Neal)
Cone and of Peter Cone of the same area as above. It has been heatedly
discussed and rehashed over and again and no one seems to be able to
place a finger on this lineage. I have proven Isaiah and hold a Florida
Pioneer
Certificate on his behalf after he arrived in Fla prior to Statehood.
I would love to hear from you or someone on your list who might have some
insight into this mystery. I have over 1600 of Isaiah's direct and indirect
descends
and I am happy to be one of them. He was a very outstanding and unique man!
Thanks for hearing me out.
