James Ray Harris, 72, of the Montford Cove Community, Marion, NC, died Tuesday, November 13, in the VA Medical Center, Asheville. Born in McDowell County to the late George R. and Ola Ledford Harris, he was a retired employee of Sara Lee Knits, and a veteran of WWII where he served in the US Army. While serving he received the Victory Medal. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by a son, Sherrill Lynn Harris, daughter, Karen Lois Harris and brother, Clarence A. Harris.
Survivors include six daughters, Kathy Cole and her husband, Eric, Tammy Early and her husband, Joey, Connie Slone and her husband, Bill, Kimberly McKinney and her husband, David all of Marion, Nellene Ledbetter and her husband, Wayne of Sevierville, Tennessee and Velda Atchley and her husband, Kenneth, of Union Mills; one sister, Emma H. Davis of Marion; six grandchildren, Mitch Randolph, Kendra Greenlee, Kyle Atchley, Haiden Slone, Cory Harris and Casey McKinney, three great grandchildren Hunter and Mackenzie Randolph and Toren Greenlee, and an aunt, Nora Harris of Marion.
The funeral was held Friday at 2 P.M. in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion. The Rev. Ernie Cole officiated and burial followed in Montford Cove Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday from 6 until 8 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan Street, Marion, NC 28752. Kirksey Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
