Olan Mills Smith, 94, of Lackey Town Road, died Thursday, December 6, in The McDowell Hospital. Born October 13, 1907 in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Henry and Rachel Vess Smith. Mr. Smith was a retired employee for the State of North Carolina and was a veteran of WWII, having served in the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine Painter Smith; one son, Johnny Ray Smith and his wife, Lynn, of Old Fort; two daugthers, Carolyn Bradley and her husband, Mike, and Judy Watring and her husband, Mike, all of Old Fort; one sister, Beulah Sowers of Nebo; five grandchildren, Melissa and Cindy Bradley, Jason Watring and Brandon and Bryan Smith.
The funeral was held Sunday at 2 P.M. in the Old Fort Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. The Rev. Harold Holcombe officiated and burial followed in Cherry Springs Memorial Park. The family received friends Saturday from 6 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home. Kirksey Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
