Brown Whitson, 73, of Marion, died Monday, January 21, 2002 at his residence. Born August 20, 1928 in Mitchell County to the late Rev. Clayton and Dollie Peterson Whitson, he was a local tire dealer and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Marion. He enjoyed metal detecting on Saturdays with friends, weather permitting.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Buchanan Whitson; a son, Donnie Whitson, of Marion; a granddaughter, Vallarie Whitson, of Marion; two sisters: Thelma Street of Bakersville and Edna Byrd of Unicoi, TN; a brother, Lloyd Whitson, of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at Calvary Baptist Church in Bakersville. The Revs. Jimmy Cannon and Don Stafford will officiate and burial will be in Cane Creek Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of McDowell County 218 Logan St. Marion, NC 28752 or to the McDowell County Rescue Squad PO Box 883 Marion, NC 28752. Westmoreland Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
