Janie Sumlin Burnette, 80, of Marion, died January 31, 2002 at her residence. Born February 26, 1921 in McDowell County to the late Ed Sumlin, Sr. and Edna Washburn Sumlin, she was retired from Baxter Healthcare and was an active member of North Cove Baptist Church since 1951.
Survivors include her husband, Thurman C. Burnette, of Marion; a daughter Doris Carpenter, and her husband, Ben; two granddaughters: Sharon Maney and her husband, Roger, and Laura Cauthen and her husband, Mark, all of Marion; five great grandchildren: Kristen, Daniel and Kari Maney and Melody & Madison Cauthen, all of Marion; four sisters: Ruby Rhom and Gladys Patterson, both of Nebo, Mary Childers of Marion and Shirley Sorrells, of Forest City; and a brother, James Sumlin, of Nebo.
Funeral services were held at 2 pm on Sunday, February 3, 2002 at North Cove Baptist Church. The Revs. Sam Robinson and Donald Wilson officiated and burial was in North Cove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 3-5 pm on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of McDowell County 218 Logan St. Marion, NC 28752. Westmoreland Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
