I am looking for the children of Rev. Hezekiah James Balch, and Martha
(McCandless) Balch. Hezekiah was born in 1746 Deer Creek, Harford Co.
Maryland . He graduated at Princeton University in 1766, receiving the A.M.
degree. After leaving college he studied for the ministry of the
Presbyterian Church and was licensed to preach the gospel in 1767 by the
Presbytery of Donegal. In 1769 he took charge of two congregations in North
Carolina, Rocky River and Poplar Tent, which he continued to serve until
his death in 1776. He was one of the signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration
of Independence. He is buried in Poplar Tent cemetery, Mecklenburg N.C.
After Hezekiahs' death his widow married an educator named George Marlin
McWhirter, the son of William and Elizabeth Ferrier McWhirter, of Lancaster
Co.Pa. and moved to Wilson Co. Tn. taking her children from her marriage to
Hezekiah with them.
