Hello Sherrill and other NC Martin researchers:

I am a descendant of Josiah or Josias Martin (Feb 1757-17 Sept 1835). This
Josiah Martin was a veteran of the Battle of Cowpens in the American
Revolutionary War. He was granted land in Rutherford Co TN and moved there
in 1803. His pension file W.1047 is available.

According to the information in the pension file, Private Martin's parents
lived in Cumberland Co PA. Because of Indian troubles, the family moved to
an adjacent county (name unknown) . Later his father (probably John
Martin) was captured by the Indians and released. The family returned to
Cumberland County until 1765 when they settled in Lincoln Co NC.

Josiah Martin married Mary McCleary (or McClary) at her father's home in
Mecklenburg Co NC on 28 May 1785.

Sorry, I do not have documentation on John Martin and his family. My
research has focused on Josiah and later generations.
