The Grier family of Steele Creek came from old James Grier who was born in
1708 and married Margaret Brown in Ireland. She was b. 1711. They had at
least 3 sons, John, James and Thomas and at least two or more daughters, two
of whom were Margaret & Mary. James Grier came to American about 1772 and
two of his sons, James II and Thomas fought in the Rev. war in Lancaster co.
PA. Is was said that one of the sons was in a battle near Waxhaw and liked
the area so much that as soon as the war was over the whole family moved to
the Waxhaw area about 1782. While they were in the Waxhaw area, their
daughter, margaret married a Mr. Wylie and remained in the area. The moved
on to the Steele Creek area within a year of two but were in Steele Creek by
1784 when the old James died on June 29, 1784..(buried at Steele Creek).
The other known daug., Mary b. 1754 married John Bigham. James II, b. 1738,
died. Oct 8, 1808 (bur. Steele Creek) married Martha ?. She is buried in
Old Waxhaw Cem. She had gone to visit her daug in the Waxhaw area and died
while there. The had children:
Alexander, Margaret (m. aDavis), Agnes and James
Thomas Grier, b. 1744, d. Jan 20 1828 buried at Steele Creek. First wife
was Hannah Alexander, b. 1761, d. Mar 22 1788, buried at Steele Creek. They
had children::
Margaret (m. Sam Neel), James, Thomas J., Alexander....
Thomas m. 2nd to Susannah Spratt, daug. of James C. Spratt and they had:
Hannah, John S., Samuel, Andrew, Catherine, Mary, William M., Zenas and
Susanna.
Jimmy Grier, grandson of the old James and Margaret Grier, was the son of
their oldest son John who remained in Ireland to finish taking care of
family business there. Little Jimmy Grier was only 2 years old but John's
wife and died so the child came with the rest of the family. John died
before he was able to leave Ireland and so Jimmy was raised by his
grandparents. Jimmy was b. 1770. He was one of the founding elders of old
Blackstock (Lower Steele Creek ARP) and all of his descendants attended the
ARP & AP (after the split of Blackstock (Associate Reformed Presby and
Associate Presby). When the fuss about fasting before communion came up
about 1803, Jimmy Grier and another elder, Wm. Ferguson (both lived in
Steele Creek ) broke away from the church and formed Little Steele Creek AP
located on Sandy Porter Rd in Steele Creek. They continued seperate
churches until about 1845 when the northern APs tried to get the southern
APs to give up their slaves. At that time, Little Steele Creek and Lower
Steele Creek (Blackstock) merged back together. Finally in 1883, the two
churches built a new church between the two and it was called Central Steele
Creek ARP. That church became so small around 1912 that they disolved their
relationship withthe ARP and joined the Southern Presby. Old Jimmy Grier's
descendants are still members of Central to this day. That should give you
a good idea about the Steele Creek Griers........
