I believe I may need to look into Taylor families of Mecklenburg Co. Hugh McLean (McClain) b.abt. 1780 NC m. 24 Apr 1810 in Mckl Co. to Elizabeth Morris b. abt. 1793 NC . Some of their children were born in NC before they moved to AL. One of their sons was named William Taylor McClain -- which I believe maybe a maiden name of Hugh's mother. Allen McClain (whom we believe to be Hugh's father) shows in the 1790 Mckl Co. Census with family. Do you have any Taylor-McClain (McLean or McLain) connections?
