Hello list,
I need some help with SANDERS and SAUNDERS and CRANFORD connected families.
Actually this message will show two separate questions from myself and
another party who has written to me asking me for help. I am unable to help
and am hoping that someone on the list might be able to and that a
connection will be made for my friend who is just getting back to
researching. Ok, first question:
William Lewis CRANFORD was born ABT 1817 in NC, and died ABT 1862 in
Cherokee Co., AL.
Polly SANDERS born Feb 28, 1814 in Montgomery County, NC, we think, but do
not have a death date as of yet. She married the above William Lewis
CRANFORD on Jan.
22, 1834 also in Montgomery County, NC? Polly may have gone under the name
of Mary, I believe since Polly often turns out to be a nickname of Mary, but
my friend only knows Polly by the name of Polly.
William and Polly had the following children:
i. MARY CRANFORD, b. May 26, 1836, TN.
ii. MARTHA C. CRANFORD, b. Mar 15, 1838, TN.
iii. SEALYAN "CELIA" CRANFORD, b. May 18, 1840, AL; m. UNKNOWN BISHOP.
iv. SARAH M. CRANFORD, b. Oct 14, 1842, AL; d. Dec 22, 1928; m. HENRY D.
SLATEN, Aug 17, 1865, Scottsboro, Jackson Co., AL; b. May 15, 1844; d. Mar
28, 1922.
Now I need to ask if anyone is connected to this William Lewis CRANFORD &
Polly SANDERS CRANFORD and if so, would you happen to know anything further
on them. Who Polly's parents were, etc? Anything further on William Lewis
CRANFORD? I would so much like to help my friend out if I can.
Ok, for the second question:
I am interested in a Milly CRANFORD who is listed on the 1830 Montgomery
County, NC Census. She is also (if this is the same one and I believe that
she is the same lady) on a death record of Leonard CRANFORD who died in
Montgomery on Feb. 9, 1915 and was born Feb. 14, 1818, as his mother. The
record states that his father was Leonard CRANFORD and the informant on the
death record was a Mrs. Della RUSSELL.
In the 1850, I believe that this son of Milly SANDERS is listed as follows:
373/375
Sanders, A. H. age 47 male farmer $2225 born NC
Sanders, Rebecca age 36 female born NC
Sanders, Jesse A. age 18 male laborer born NC
Sanders, Martha Jane age 16 female born NC
Sanders, R. F. age 5 male born NC
Sanders, Aaron T. age 3 male born NC
Sanders, Cerona D. age 1 female born NC
Cranford, Leonard age 24 male laborer born NC
Whillington, Tillman age 12 male born NC
Hudson, Wiley age 21 mail carrier born NC
Either I overlooking her, but I am unable to locate Milly in the 1850 census
in either Montgomery or Stanly County.
But in the 1860 Stanly County, NC Census I locate her with a daughter and
granddaughter as follows:
Milly CRANFORD, 65, female
Nancy CRANFORD, 41, female
Lizzy CRANFORD, 21, female
And either I am overlooking Leonard or he is another county besides
Montgomery or Stanly at the taking of the census.
Now in 1870 they are as follows with Milly no longer living with her
daughter and granddaughter and a new child is in the house now:
Nancy CRANFORD, 50, female, white, farmer
Elizabeth CRANFORD, 27, female, white, at home
Jefferson CRANFORD, 8, male, white, at home
I find Milly living in Stanly during the 1870 census as follows:
198 Ben MAUDLIN, 35, male white, Carpenter
Ann MAUDLIN, 33, female, white, keeps house
Francis MAUDLIN, 3, female, at home
Hettie MAUDLIN, 2, female, at home
Milly CRANFORD, 80, female, white, at home.
Now my question is who is Milly's parents? Is she connected to the RUSSELL
or MAUDLIN families?
I am very interested in Milly as she is a possible parent of my Willis G.
CRANFORD born 1823 in Montgomery County, NC. It is at present, a toss up of
Milly SANDERS CRANFORD or Marvel CRANFORD. I am leaning towards Marvel as
Willis' father but I can not rule out Milly as she fits the 1830 census for
having children his age frame.
Why is she missing in the 1850 census for either Stanly or Montgomery
Counties or is she?
The fact that Milly has a granddaughter named Elizabeth and the boy, named
Jefferson really gets me. My Willis did the same. Both Jefferson's are
about the same age.
Anyone know anything about the above folks? Any of them?
Thanks so much.
