Richard,
Thanks for the correction. I don't actually research the Cranfords but I'm
glad to get information about them around this time period. You never know
when a tidbit will help out with one's own line. My connection is through
the family of Isaiah Ballard and Laura (Elora) Averlina Cranford (daughter
of Richard and Elizabeth). Isaiah's sister, Lucy Jane Ballard, is my
ancestor. So far, my Montgomery Co., NC families are the Ballards,
Scarboroughs and Morrises. Because of the destruction of so many records,
it's hard to get the maiden names before this time period. Oh, well.
If you see any information about the Ballards or Scarboroughs, I'd love to
hear about it.
I hope the work of Joyce Mills isn't lost. Good luck.

| Cynthia,
| Thanks for the response on James Madison Cranford being
| killed in the Civil War in 1863.
| I have seen one listed then, but the estate records show
| him as being dead in July of 1862, and the estate was filed
| in Oct. 1962.
|
| There was another J.M. Cranford who I've been told was also
| killed in 1863, once I read some info.which was debating if
| it was James Madison, then someone said it was James Milton,
| either way, I have saved a lot of info. and am still trying to sort
| this out.
|
| Since James Madison had several Cranford brothers who were in the
| Civil War ( All Confederate ) and from Montgomery Co, I would think
| if he were in the war, he would also be a Confederate.
| Who knows, the Civil War is known for breaking up families as they
| Took different sides, so anything is possible.
|
| I saved you email and will put it with the rest of my Branford "stack" and
see
| What might fit in.
|
| Thanks for you input and info. in this.
|
| Richard
|
| PS: I once was in touch with the late Joyce Taylor Mills and she invited
| me to come see her and she would show me what she had on the Cranford
| side. I'm sorry to say I didn't get back with her and then one day I saw
her
| obituary in the paper.
| I contacted her family and the family had filed her research papers away
until
| they could figure out what to do with them, and who would take up the
| genealogy
| from there on.
