Kathy,

The New Hanover Library is stocked full of microfilm, books, family folders, etc.

The microfilm contains the census, old tax records, marriage bonds, wills, to name a few. There are file cabinets the film is stored in and they are all clearly identified. Pick a time period and look. I believe some of these are indexed so you'll be able to see quickly if the name you're researching is there or not.

Also in the file cabinets are family file folders. There's a file for each last name and information in the file concerning that family. Be sure to look in these as I got a good start on my Bordeaux family from a file folder.

There are books on different families. I wrote a history on my Baker ancestors who originated in NC and migrated to FL. The library had it bound and placed on their shelves.

There are many, many more sources there so plan to get there early and stay late on your one day. Try to make it a day when the library is open until 9:00 P.M.

The women who work in the North Carolina Room, the research room, are superb and will help you all they can. You might even want to write them ahead of time and they can get you off on a good start when you get there.

Take plenty of change for the copier. I can't remember if it's .10 or .25 cents per copy. Call and ask. I usually take a roll of dimes or quarters with me when I hit a library.

A hint about Wilmington's courthouse records. I was searching for a will on John Baker and checked the indexes in the courthouse. There was no record of a will. I then went to the library and came across John's will (1767) in their microfilm. With the book and page numbers I went back to the courthouse and obtained a clear copy of the will (The courthouse is across the street and down only a couple of blocks from the library).
