The following is from "Orange County - 1752-1952" edited by
Hugh Lefler and Paul Wager, published in 1953.

"WILLIAM JOHNSTON - Merchant, Land Speculator. Born in
Scotland, settled in Hillsboro about 1767 or 1768. In 1769
joined Richard Bennehan in operating Little River Store.
Owned farm, mill, and other property in Orange county. One
of members of Louisa Company, 1774, to develop western
territory. Treasurer of Transylvania Company. Represented
Orange county in provincial congresses of April and
November, 1776."
