VIOLENT DEATHS IN COUNTY ON CHRISTMAS DAY
KENNETH FLANDERS JACKSON, about 50, of E. Park Drive, dropped dead at
the Country Club about noon Friday while playing golf. MR. JACKSON was
superintendent of Draper Corp., E. Spartanburg plant. SAM COOPER, 34,
of Chesnee, was injured fatally on N. Church street in front of
Central Meth. church Friday about 6 p.m., when he was hit by a
Carolina Scenic bus. MR. COOPER was taken to General Hospital and died
at 12:50 Saturday morning.
The Third Holiday victim was added to the list about midnight Friday,
Pfc. NEWTON G. GREER'S car struck the bridge and crashed into a small
creek just inside the city limits on the Airport road. Sheriff BROCKMAN
said that Pfc. GREER, 22, and his brother, R.W. , who was not hurt,
were driving to their home on rt.3., when the accident occurred.
Christmas Day deaths were added to the list when MRS. MARGARET WILLIAMS
, about 50, of Tryon, was killed in an auto - truck collision about 8
miles south of Greenville on Hwy. 29. Three other persons were injured
seriously.
MRS. WILLIAMS husband , JOHN L. , 56, was admitted to Greenville
hospital with a head injury. MR. and MRS. CLAUDE HUFF of Spartanburg,
who were in the truck, were also admitted to the hospital. MR. HUFF,
53, suffered a possible broken hip and head injuries while MRS. HUFF ,
45, received head cuts and several bruises.
State Patrolman, H.L. DRUMMOND, SAID THAT THE PICK-UP TRUCK CAUGHT FIRE
AND BURNED AFTER THE COLLISION.
