I tried to post earlier but I do not think it went through. I just wanted to make a comment .... I was born in the Snowbird community and I currently live in the Painttown community here in Cherokee. I am 68 years old and in all of my years, I do not think things have changed as far as attitudes. I remember being a young boy and the tourists making comments as to our skin color and it is usually referred to as red. I always said "My skin is not red". The younger generation talk of walking the "red road" and this is not even something the Cherokee believe in. When a path is spoken about, it is called the white path, not the red road. I also see on the internet alot "native" folks calling each other skins .. to me that is offensive. I guess it boils down to knowing your history. If you have no clue what the word redskin really means .. research it. Most people speak the way they do out of ignorance and do not understand that the way they speak is offence.
