Hello
This is a way to find the person you are looking for easy. I
had heard that my ancestor fought in the Civil War. I wrote
and got the NATF form 80. I asked for three as if saves
time and they send three in one envelope. I filled out two,
mailed each one separately and waited. All I knew were
basic things There are three places to check concerning
Pension; bounty-land warrant application; and military.
If you want all three records on your ancestor send three,
one for each. If you check all three, they mail it back and
the paper implies they can not locate the person. They
will not cross off two and search for one. Then assume
they served in the Army. I had only the fact that he
served in the Army, his name, the state and if you
know any other information about him. I did not.
You can also have them bill you which I did because I
was not certain whether they could find him with so
little information. They did. The required minimum
identification of veteran must be completed or
your order cannot be serviced is Name, Branch of service,
State, War in Which he served, & whether he was
confederate or union.
For copies of the form 80, write to General Reference
Branch (NNRG), National Archives and Records Administration,
7th and Pennsylvania Avenue N.W., Washington, DC 20408
(Note) One ancestor I sent for I did not think he would have
served as he was 42 and I had seen that 41 was the cutoff age.
I did not think he served but I wanted to know. They sent his
records.
