Subject: [NCROOTS] RE: Gene Pool Database Info.
Date: Sun, 2 Jul 2000 19:04:18 EDT
To All Listers:
Please take the time to read this. Yesterday I posted a new database (Gene
Pool) that was added on ancestry.com and would be free for 10 days. Anyone
unsure of what info. is in the database, please go to the below and read the
description.
<A HREF="http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4725.htm">Ancestry.com
- Individual Database Search</A> -------- AOL Users
http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4725.htm ------- Other servers
I have received many personal e-mails questioning this site, how to pull up
info, and that there are too many surnames to go through.
I am in no way connected with ancestry.com with the exception of being a
subscriber and when I see a new database that has info. that I feel might
help someone with their research, I post it.
I have gone back into the site and tried different variations of spelling,
etc.
The site does not appear to use soundex or boolean.
Example:
I typed in STORM, Johann and had no hits. Then I typed in Johann Storm and
had 22 hits. Then I tried the varied spelling of STURM, over 1000. Then
Johann STURM came up with 52 hits. If you type in only a surname such as
STORM - you will get every surname, town, city that has STORM in it. So it
appears you need a given name to narrow the search. It can be narrowed
slightly by typing in surname, county, state, but if you are researching
STORM in Virginia - it can come up with the town of Storm Lake, IA and a
Given Name of Virginia (SMITH, JONES, etc)
There is much info. to be found on the site, whether historical or a
direction of research for surnames.
I tried typing in the below and came up with the following hits showing the
person who died, how, state of death, parents, spouses
Murdered - 25
Died at Sea - 53
Civil War - 523
Rev. War - 17
WWI - 18
Suicide - 15
Typhoid - 32
Prison - 186
Insane - 28
Indians - 97
The below came up with birth/death info
Slaves - 39
Plantations - 785 (this site lists the names of many, many plantations)
