Hi Dana and others,

First . . . this is not intended as a slam on anyone, OK? :-) Everyone
knows how easy words can be misunderstood. This is also my one and only
post to the list, and if needed, I'll send replies to others off-line.

I fully realize what Dana says is true, but my point may have been
misunderstood. What I originally asked for was information on which
libraries have memberships to HeritageQuest and offered that service thru
remote entry. Some list members have told me of libraries providing that
service, so that was the essence of my inquiry. I'm also aware of the trial
memberships, but am not interested in those. And, I know HeritageQuest uses
passwords with your library cards (something also tells me they use tracing
technology to cross-validate your computer IP address as well, at least I
think they do). Anyway, I fully expect and "want" to pay for the service
but wanted to go thru a library to gain access . . . really. If not, I'd
have already purchased the subscription on my own.

IMHO, although most libraries now have computer access in their facilities
they are woefully missing the boat in terms of "real" access. Many of them
still see themselves as repositories of information in books (and they are),
but in actuality they're sources of, or means to, get information . . . .
and in today's world, I'd like to think libraries would be the leaders in
pushing the digital world "to me" and not looking for me to get in my car
and visit them . . . they're still in a bricks and mortar world. And don't
get me wrong, I'm a proponent of libraries (with my paid memberships) but
believe they were (and still are) slow to catch on to the digital world. An
example is their reluctance to provide coffee kiosks in their buildings . .
. . then Borders took the idea and ran with it. And slow to provide video
tapes . . . then we got Blockbusters. There are other examples, but I'm
sure everyone gets the idea.

Lastly, for everyone's genealogy interest I've checked with the Library of
Congress and the Bureau of Census as to why they don't do more in the
digital world versus selling the data to private sources, and of course,
their response was budgets to do it. Write your representatives and
senators!!!!

PS: Am working on a website (with another kin folk) primarily for those
with deep roots in Surry County and will put it on-line in a few weeks. All
the information will be without any fees or ads either, although we do
reserve the copyright protections.
