Even though your ancester died without a will there may be estate records for the deceased.

Those that are new to genealogy may not be aware of the Loose Estate Papers in the NC archives, this is a valuable source of information. They are filed alphabetically by the name of the deceased. They contain varying amounts of information. These show the distribution of the estate as well as names of daughters' husbands (Married daughters did not inherit except as wives of their husbands). They can also show division of property for deceased childrens' heirs.
These papers also show the administrator's name and the amount of the bond, the bond was required to be approximately twice the value of the estate. This can give you an idea of the status and wealth of the deceased.

There is a $20 charge plus cost of copies for non-residents of NC, but if you reside in NC you can request info with the charge and via the internet. The address for the NC archives is http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/arch/mail.htm
