I am at a "brick wall" with my gggrandfather, James C.
Smalley who was born in McDowell County, NC in 1822.
(Of course, it would have been another county in those
days cause McDowell County wasn't formed till later -
I'm thinking probably Rutherford or Burke County).
Would anyone know anything about his family? I can't
find out who his parents were. I suspect a lady by
the name of Nancy Smalley was his grandmother, but I
need to document and confirm my suspicions as well as
figure out which one of her sons was his father. (She
did have a son also named James C., but I can't find
any records of any of her sons except John who married
Rebecca Brackett).
