You will need to paste the rest of the link into your browser for the page
to come up. Or just go to
http://www.familysearch.org/ ,directions on finding the census are given
below.

Hi,

Click on this link at the family search site the 1880 census is free there.
You should also ask for a confirmation lookup after you find your people.
Many of us have found that the people who copied the census reports made
many mistakes. Some are just in letter interpetation, some more serious.
One lookup I did on disk before it was free online had the family listed.
The last person, an older man did not make sense to her. I looked up the
microfilmed census at Ancestry and the man had a different last name and
instead of father it said Boarder. Big difference!

Also I noticed something tonight. I haven't looked at the site in a few
weeks but the link is no longer on the home page of FamilySearch. Click the
search tab up top, then census on the left. Then remember to click the
census block from "ALL" to the 1880 census first. Then fill out your search
criteria.

I filled out William Newell, North Carolina for the census state and 17
names came up. Check and see if one of them looks like your guy. Click
the name and then on the upper right hand side click household and it lists
the whole family. Above that link is another that lets you check the
persons neighbors.
