Alan,
This same McKenzie family of New Hanover Co., NC, held 77 slaves as
enumerated in the 1790 North Carolina Federal Census. The 1800 & 1810
Census list a 'Jim Boy' McKenzie living on the plantation of the previously
mentioned George McKenzie. 'Jim Boy' is listed as a 'Colored Free Person'
with a charge of 18 additional slaves.
George McKenzie evidently had 'Freed' Jim Boy and made him a forman in
charge of his slaves on a separate part of his plantation, Lilliput.
A couple of years ago I communicated with a descendant of Jim Boy. They
are indeed Black and confirmed what I indicated above.
