I guess I am as Stanlyian Co as anyone there but I had to "leave at
sundown on two lengthy occasions--1948 and 1978 and I expect I'll never
return for my final experience. My full name is Arthur Lee Hudson Jr.
son of the mailcarrier Arthur L Hudson Sr. I was born in Alb. in 1930
and lived at the corner of Stonewall and West Main streets til 1935 wnen
I moved next to Margy Mauney at 146 N. 4th st. Here I drove her nuts
making tractor noises as I plowed dirt under the front yard trees, ha
ha. O I was across the street stripping the leaves of Mrs Mabrys srubs
between her yard and the street. I went to Central Elem School whereI
coulded mix well with the millhill or the uptown crowd either so I took
my licks from my so called pals from in town not those of the millhill
gang. At 8 we built ahome on the Albemarle/Norwood road.(Where Doctor
Eddins family lives today

. That made things worse as I had no city friends as I now came in on
a Country Bus or road my bike in bitter cold just to have the fenders
torn off it going down N2d st to my 52 So home. Bill Ross, Charles
Ross. James Tucker and others were what I tought friends but the usually
could not be found when needed. Gene Moose kept my shirt buttons riped
off at the bus stop. One of the Winecoff twins dropped a footfall from
the second story of the Central School with the point of the ball
stricking me right on top of my head. TRY THAT FOR PAIN! to this day I
think I suffered a head injury from that incident. To report it to the
Prin. B.C. Parker would have been good for swippings during recess by
her and the "good ole boys"who did such things routinely. The students
were treated by their teachers in accordance with whose child was. I
figured that out quickly. And I didnt fit into any pattern of social
standing' So I became cannon fodder.Poorly educated, kept in the back of
the roomand generally ignored by my teachers as they instructed to the
frontrow of Albemarles elite.I graduated with the class of 1948 and
misses no grades but I can tell You I was cheated out of an
education. That was the system! I worked at Belks for Carl Morton,Al
Griffeth, Richard Cashatt, Frank Watkins, Joe Beaman,Jack Green and many
others. Albemarle offered me absolutely nothing and in Aug 1948 I broke
my dads heart and lett for the Air force with 57 cents in my pocket to
get me to SanAntonio. Texas. I rose in rank fairly rapidly and retired
back to Albemarle20 yrs 4 mos and 28 days later and found conditions
unchanged. I came from Vietnam and found no welcome,no assistance.and
the same controlling clique . My 4 children haddone well in school in
Colo..So.Dakota,Japan etc. but upon their experence with the Badin
school it all changed for the worse and there were absolutely no person
to help. That Jan 1969 was cold and the people were cold.Bob Sweetof
CandA gave me a job.But the atmosphere just made a proud family cry. My
family fell apart. All were 18 or older. So I lost my wife to the
Albemarle Underground....I resigned my career postal job.sold my
beautiful home on the Morrow Mt Rd and all the work I had done there ,
paid up my bills and left Stanly Co. again and headed my Chevrolet up 52
toward Salisbury free of all burden but with no where to go. But I was
being looked after and HE GUIDED me. Twenty more years have passed now
but I haven't forgotten a thing. Im 70 now, I served my country well as
well as my postal customers in Albemarle. I am 100 % service connected
disabled. Overall, I have done well dispite the actions of some. You
are wondering why I write this. Well Ill tell you Charlotte Palmer is a
grandmother of mine and I,ll continue on that tomorrow. Thanks

Elizabeth, Charlotty Palmer Austin (1779-1828) is one of 14 children of John
Palmer and wife Tamer, last name unknown. This Palmer line is well
documented back to the immigrant ancestor, William Palmer from England
(1590-1670) who settled in the Westchester County, NY/CT area. The best
resource for Charlotte's line backward is a small three volume set "The
Descendants of John Palmer of Stanly County, NC" compiled by and privately
printed by William Fisher Palmer of Salisbury, NC, about 1981. If you are
unable to access in NC, email me privately and I can make a copy for you
(about 100 pages total). Charlotte Palmer Austin is supposedly buried at
the Old Austin Cemetery in New London. I descend from her older brother
Demarcus Palmer and wife Sally Hearne. Lots of people researching this
Palmer line. Helen Wall, Houston, TX
