This seemed like something that would be in "Death Notices from the People's
Press (Salem, North Carolina) 1851-1892", so I checked and found this notation:

KISER, JOHN, who lived about five miles from Winston, found dead in a creek,
n.d. It is supposed he shot himself, but whether accidentally or intentionally
is unknown. (11-19-1872)

This book was published in 1997 by the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Genealogy
Society. The People's Press was an early newspaper published by Salem,
NC, before it was joined with Winston to become one city.
