Subject: [NCWAKE] Location of a grave

Hi! I need help! Several of you have given me invaluable assistance
over the years, and I am most grateful.
Recently, I was able to obtain a copy of The Goodwin Family of Central
North Carolina by T. Jerry Goodwin. It is marvelous. I got it from
Amazon.
I have been searching for years to find a death certificate and the
grave of my great grandfather, JOSEPH P> GOODWIN of Apex, Wake County,
NC, to no avail. I have written to the Raleigh and Wake offices for a
certificate...none available. He died in September 1917 so they should
have had it.
My mother told me several times that Joseph P. Goodwin was buried at
Catawba Springs Church in Apex. I have written there, and they have no
record of JPG. A cousin, now deceased, searched the cemetery and did
not find a grave. The church did tell me that there had been at least
one cemetery "clean up" in which several gravestones were found to be
broken, and the fragments were thrown away.
Does anyone have any ideas?
My Joseph P. Goodwin was married to Emma Utley Goodwin in 1876, and
they had about ten children. He served in Co D, 31st NC Infantry...was
adjutant and served with Distinguished Service.
Someone on this line sent me the information that Joseph P. Goodwin and
my great, great grandfathers, John J. Utley and Hinton Goodwin, also
served w/the designation of Distinguished Service. What is the source
of that information?
A thought: It is possible that Joseph is buried in Portsmouth (then
Port Norfolk), Virginia, as my research shows that his wife, Emma, was
living in Portsmouth w/her daughter, Nellie. Emma is buried in
Portsmouth, and I have a photo of her gravestone. She passed away in
1946.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
