A clarification on my announcement of yesterday.
I need to clarify the project a bit. They are not going to actually
transcribe the estate records, although, I do believe they had mentioned
doing that at one time, that is not what they are doing. This is from the
NCGS about the project:
"This project is the creation of an index - there are no transcription
efforts involved. We are simply asking volunteers to abstract the name of
the estate, the date of probate, and the county of record.
The digital images are owned by FamilySearch. The NCSA used the textural
records as a revenue source (copying costs). They have given this up for
the genealogical community at-large. "
The NCGS website is here: http://www.ncgenealogy.org/
Now having said that, once the indexing has been completed, the images will
be available to the general public and those who want to transcribe them
further are welcome to do so. Some at the NCGenWeb have expressed an
interest in further transcribing the records and will be creating an every
name index and/or transcribing the estate records that will be linked to
the actual images, for our County websites. I know that once that gets under
way, those county coordinators will be needing and asking for volunteers for
their individual counties. The counties that I am personally involved with
will be among those that will be doing that including Franklin, Granville,
Halifax, Vance and Warren, as I am sure many others will be also, and will
be making some kind of announcement in the coming months. Our State website
has links to each of the counties that you may want to stay in contact with
or to check with the coordinator of your county of interest:
