Alfred was born in 1840, was on the 1850 census in the household of Mary Hampton Greer, the widow of James, and in 1860 he is in Cove Creek, Watauga Co., NC with his wife Margaret Malindy Kilby and their first daughter, Mary Ann. In 1870 his wife and two daughters are living with her parents, William Haynes and Frances Adams Kilby, in Washington Co., TN. I have not found him on any list of Civil War soldiers on either side, but he could easily be one of the A Greer's. He is not included in any list of children for James Greer's children. I think he is the child of Mary Greer, the daughter of James and Mary Hampton Greer, who married William Thomas in 1844. I have no proof of this, but she was still living with her parents and was about 25 in 1840.
