John V. Boschee

John V. Boschee was among the early pioneers of his community. He came to
America in October, 1884, with his parents and settled at Menno, South
Dakota. Mr. Boschee was the son of Valentin and Philippina Boschee, nee
Meyer, Born August 25, 1883, at Kassel, South Russia.

In the Spring of 1885 the father of Mr. Boschee loaded all of their
belongings, including oxen and wagon, on the train and came as far as
Ipswich, South Dakota, the end of the railroad, from there on they came by
covered wagon, They filed on a homestead eighteen miles wsouthwest of Wishek.
Upon arrival at their at teir new home, the first thing for them to do was to
break up sod to build their house. Due to lack of money they were forced to
gather buffalo bones and haul them with oxen teams to town, wich was about
eithty miles from the Boschee farm. Many times at trip to town would take a
week. There the bones were traded for flour, sugar and a few other needed
items. The winters were very severe, many times the barns were covered with
snow that the doors had to be shoveled out. The hay and straw oftentimes had
to be carried into the barns with bushel baskets for the oxen and cows. In
1897 the first lumber barn was built, which is still part of the barns of
the Boschee farm.

On December 8 1904, Mr. Boschee was united in marriage to Christina Thurn,
Daughter of Fredrich and Christina Thurn, nee Schnadt. To this union were
born eleven children, nine of whom are living and are: Theobald, Wishek,
North Dakota; Amanda (Fetzer), Venturia; Edna (Woehl), Wishek, North Dakota;
Rosina (Ackerman), Artas, South Dakota; Martha (Martel), Wishek, North
Dakota: Leadman, Wishek, North Dakota; Ida (Bauer), Galt, California; Alvin,
