The 1900 Census image for Walnut township, Palo Alto County, Iowa
James W, born August 1874, age 25, born in S. Dakota to both parents born in
Ireland
Mary, born Aug 1881, 18, born in Scotland to both parents born in Scotland,
imm. 1884
Earl J, born Dec 1899 in South Dakota.

World War I draft registration card images shows a James William Haney, born
24 August, 1874 working as a carpenter in Winner, Tripp County, South
Dakota. His nearest relative is a Patrick Haney, in Scotland, SD. He
registered on Sept 11, 1918 at the local board in Winner, SD.

I don't know if the above is the correct person, or if he had a relative
Patrick. All I could find
