Since John's 1930 census record shows him as widowed (Wd), I would first check for a death certificate for Johanna between 1920 and 1930 by contacting the North Dakota Dept of Health Division of Vital Records - http://www.vitalnd.com/. They will search their records and provide a certified copy for a nominal fee.

It is possible that Louise also died during that time period. A quick look at 1930 census records for women named Louise in Sheridan County turns up no Louise at 16 years of age or so. Or, if she did marry so young, she may have moved out of the area.
