Subject: Obtaining archived digests by Email

Last week my computer scrambled some of my saved digests. I posted a
request for someone to
send me the digests. (Thanks to those who responded)
I received the following info on how to obtain the archived digests from
Rootsweb (Thanks, Sallie!!) and it worked great so wanted to forward this
info to the lists I am on. Hope it will be of help to others.

While the archives web site is being rebuilt, you can retrieve archives
easily by email.

IMPORTANT!
Please remember ALL archive searches and retrievals are sent to the list
command address (the one you used when you subbed; the one with
"request" (no quotes) in the address) with the word "archive" (without
the
quotes) in the subject line. As always, there must be NOTHING but the
command
in the body text. Turn off your signature. The archives are in DIGEST
form, but you
Don't need to subscribe to the digest mode in order to retrieve a digest.

If You Don't Know The Digest You Need:
Using the MILLER list as an example:

Send a message to:
with: "archive" (no quotes) in the subject
Put: "ls volume98" in the body (that is a lower case "ell" in the
command):

ls volume98 (no space between volume and 98)

You get back via email:

Looking at the dates of the digest, you determine that you want
#9 Aand #10 (Feb. 5 and Feb. 8)). The file # is the last entry on each
line.

To Request The Digest You Want From the above list or if you already know
which digest you want(as I did):

Send a NEW message to (DON'T just reply to
the message you received from them)
Put: "archive" in the subject (again no quotes)
In the body of the message you will put which digests you want as below:
(Note: there is NO space between the word "volume" and "98".)

get volume98/9
get volume98/10

You will get digests #9 and #10 by email.

A shortcut is if you are retrieving ALL the digest in a "set", for
instance, all the digests numbered "20, 21, etc.), you could enter:

get volume98/2*

"*" is a UNIX wild-card meaning "any character";
"2*" will expand to 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29
